John Britt PotteryArtist BioJohn Britt has been a potter and teacher for over 24 years. He lives in mountains of western North Carolina although he grew up in Dayton, Ohio. John is primarily a self-taught potter who has worked and taught at universities, colleges and craft centers across the country, including the Penland School of Crafts where he served as the Clay Coordinator and then, as the Studio’s Manager. He is the author of the “The Complete Guide to High-Fire Glaze; Glazing & Firing at Cone 10” which was published by Lark Books in 2004, was the juror for the book; "500 Bowls”, and has written numerous articles for ceramics publications including: Ceramics Monthly, Ceramic Review, Studio Potter, Clay Times, Ceramic Technical and The Log Book. Learn basic glaze chemistry of clay bodies and glazes
This overview of ceramic glazes is designed for intermediate to advanced potters seeking to expand their skills. Discussion of cones, kilns, firing dynamics and principles, as well as applying those principles to various firing cycles will be our focus. We'll mix glazes and do color and line blends for cone 10, cone 06, and cone 05. Firing will be done on test tiles and your own bisque-fired mugs/cups.

This course in basic ceramic chemistry is designed for potters who want to become better acquainted with the materials used in ceramics, their origins and uses in high-fire, mid-range and low fire glazes. We will briefly cover oxides and their sources, the Seger Unity Molecular formula, and will mix and test glaze recipes on test tiles. Some experience with ceramics is preferred.
